If you work with data, you’ve probably been hearing a lot about the General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR), a new European data privacy framework that will tighten up the way that the personal data of EU citizens is collected, handled, and processed.
When it goes into effect on May 25, 2018, any organization that handles the personal data of EU citizens will be legally bound by it—whether or not they are based in the EU. That’s right—GDPR has a global reach. And the fines for non-compliance are steep: up to 20 million EUR, or 4% of annual turnover, whichever is greater.
So what does that mean for your website? GDPR affects the way personal data is managed across the whole of an organization, and that includes data on your website.
Know where personal data is stored and displayed on your website
The GDPR module helps you locate four different types of personal data on your website (names, email addresses, phone numbers, and personal identification numbers), and shows you where they appear on your webpages.
This allows you to assess how personal data is currently being handled on your sites, and whether actions need to be taken (for example, to hide or remove data, or contact individuals for consent about their personal data). And it’s all automated, saving you from having to manually perform CTRL+F searches or run complicated scripts to look for personal data on your sites.
Stay ahead of changes to employee names on your site
A key aspect of GDPR compliance involves continuously monitoring your websites for personal data—data which often changes. Take your employees, for example. If you identify your employees by name on your website, you’ll need to make sure that this data is handled appropriately when staff leave your organization or when names change. The Siteimprove GDPR module helps you anticipate these changes by allowing you to upload your own names so that they can be flagged when they appear on your site.
Track the full extent of your web presence
If your company has been around for a while or operates internationally, chances are it has a few registered domains. Maybe more than a few. Maybe more than it’s kept track of.
But why might you want to know how many domains you own or what they are? Because under GDPR, you’ll need to know where you might be holding personal data online—across all your domains.
Don’t fret about having to do an individual WHOIS lookup for every single domain that’s registered to your organization—the GDPR module has you covered. Siteimprove GDPR trawls the internet looking for domains that potentially could belong to your organization. Important meta data about each domain and subdomain is presented to help you determine whether it belongs to your company.
Once you have a handle on all the domains that your organizations owns, the next step is to make sure that you're monitoring personal data on all of them. The GDPR module indicates whether a confirmed domain is currently crawled within the Content Suite so you can quickly see which sites aren’t monitored and take steps to cover your bases.
Policies to help safeguard data privacy and web security
The GDPR module comes pre-equipped with seven policies and policy templates to help you enforce data privacy and security standards. They’re designed to pre-emptively look for sensitive data or potential weak points on your websites, minimizing the risk of data breaches that could result in non-compliance.

A sharing feature that respects your users’ data privacy
The Share Widget is a new feature that allows you to give your visitors a quick shortcut to post your web content on social media platforms like Facebook and Twitter, or to email and print.
You might already be using a similar type of widget, but what sets ours apart, we’re proud to say, is that it does not collect your visitors’ data to re-sell or share with third parties. So you can safely add a Share Widget knowing that you won’t be compromising your visitor’s data privacy when they share your content.
Start enabling easy sharing of web content
If you’ve set up surveys in Feedback, setting up a Share Widget is just as easy. You can add multiple Share Widgets to your website, so you can customize different ones for different pages.
The Share Widget feature is free and available to all Siteimprove customers. You can add one to your website by going to Settings > Extras > Share Widget.
