The Document Downloads group explained

By Sean Needham
This article explains the Document Downloads group found in Siteimprove Analytics. It covers the following questions:
- How can I find out which documents have been downloaded from my website?
- How can I see the number of downloads for each file?
- Which document types are included?
- Why is my document not included in this group?
- How does Siteimprove track these documents?
- How can I see which page links to the document that was downloaded?
How can I find out which documents have been downloaded from my website?
We create a group called “Document Downloads” automatically in Siteimprove Analytics.
To see the number of documents downloaded:
- Go to Analytics > Analytics Overview
- Select the Document Downloads group along the top menu
- Select the period using the date filter
- The Page views tab shows the number of documents downloaded for that period
How can I see the number of downloads for each file?
- Go to the Analytics > Content > All Pages
- Select the Document Downloads group
- Select the period using the date selector
- The table shows the Title, URL and Page views for each document
Which document types are included?
By default, the Document Downloads group registers documents of the following type:
- PDFs (.pdf)
- Word (.doc, .docx)
- PowerPoint (.ppt, .pptx)
- Excel (.xls, .xlsx)

Why is my document not included in this group?
If you know a document has been downloaded but it is not listed in the group, then we suggest you try the following:
- Confirm that you have selected the correct site
- Change the period on the date selector
- Make sure that the Siteimprove Analytics JavaScript is present on the page linking to the document.
- Make sure that the document is one of the file types that registered in the Document Downloads (.pdf, .doc, .docx, .ppt, .pptx, .xls, .xlsx)
- If your document is not one of these types mentioned, you can still see statistics for the document, by looking for the URL of the document under Analytics > Content -> All Pages and using the search functionality (e.g. searching for “.csv”).
- You can add file types to your Documents Downloads group using a URL match on the file extensions. See: How do I create a group based on a URL/title match?
How does Siteimprove track these documents?
The document downloads are tracked automatically using “onClick” tracking. If the Siteimprove Analytics JavaScript is on a webpage and a user clicks on a document link, then this is registered in Siteimprove Analytics along with the document title and URL.
How can I see which page links to the document that was downloaded?
- Go to the Analytics > Content > All Pages
- Select the Document Downloads group
- Select the period using the date selector
- Select the document from the table to show
- On the left-menu select Behavior Tracking
- Click on Internal Referrers to see the pages that link to the document.
